Massive blaze at recycling plant

17 Jun 2013

A major fire at a recycling plant in Worcestershire is finally under control, although firefighters remain on site as they dampen down the scene.

The severe blaze at Lawrence Recycling in Stourport Road, Kidderminster, sent a tower of black smoke into the air that was visible for over 20 miles around.

Fifteen fire engines were called to the scene, while all roads in the nearby vicinity were closed off as firefighters tackled the inferno.

It is not the first time that the depot has been affected by a fire, following a similar incident in December last year.

Around 80 firefighters were called out to tackle the blaze back then, which had broken out in part of a building where tons of paper and plastics are stored before being processed for recycling.

The cause of the latest fire is not yet known, although a West Mercia Police spokesman has confirmed that all road closures in the area have been lifted with the situation now under control.
