Crews fight fire at empty school

28 Feb 2013

Fire crews were called out to a fire at a former primary school in Glasgow.

The emergency services were alerted to the blaze at the unoccupied Westercommon Primary School in Glasgow's Ellesmere Street at about 2.45am on Tuesday. Almost a third of the now vacant school building had caught alight, producing large amounts of smoke, a spokesman for Strathclyde Fire and Rescue said.

At one point 35 firefighters were working to extinguish the blaze. No one was injured in the incident.

Group commander Eddie Mullen said the school was well alight by the time the fire service arrived on the scene. He said crews "worked tirelessly in difficult conditions" to stop the flames spreading to the rest of the building and other properties nearby.

Strathclyde Police is now working with the fire service to find out what started the blaze.
