Bar worker suffers burns to face
19 Dec 2011
A hotel owner has been fined £2,500 after a worker suffered burns when cleaning glasses.
The 30-year-old woman was working at the Castle Hotel in Bramber, West Sussex in April when she was asked to use a beer line cleaner to get marks off the glasses.
She was washing the glassware by hand when the hotel owner asked her to don a pair of rubber gloves and use the cleaner, Horsham Magistrates' Court heard.
But although the gloves kept her hands safe, the mixture got on to her face, leaving her with burns and scarring.
Environmental investigators from Horsham District Council looked into the case and found that the burns could have been prevented.
The hotel owner was found guilty of breaching health and safety law and ordered to pay costs of £2,200.
