Advice issued over fire strike
19 Sep 2013
Businesses are being urged to put safety contingency plans in place next week when firefighters in England and Wales plan to strike.
A four-point advice guide has been issued before next Wednesday's (September 25) action between midday and 4pm over a pension row.
The Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) is working closely with the Scottish and Welsh Government and Local Fire and Rescue Authorities (FRAs).
They are making sure that proper contingency arrangements are in position to deliver any alternative plans needed.
Their four top tips for businesses are:
- review your present fire risk assessments
- check your detection systems
- ensure escape plans are in place and staff know them
- prevent arson risks, such as rubbish left around.
FRAs are responsible for imposing overall fire safety precautions (GFPs) in most workplaces, buildings and homes.
This includes fire doors and ways of escape, fire fighting equipment on premises, fire alarms and smoke detectors and fire drills and training staff in reducing the likelihood of fire.
