Indoor air quality is influenced by many factors, for example its location, the external sources of pollution, effectiveness of filters, occupation levels, performance of the ventilation system, type of use, the fabric and décor.

Dangers to health

Many pollutants can be harmful to health through their potential to cause illness or allergic reactions. The ability of the ventilation system to remove stale air or pollution generated within the building and supply fresh purified air to the occupants will have a major impact on their wellbeing and productivity.

Although outdoor air is generally considered to be fresh, it contains a range of pollutants such as particles from vehicle emissions, pollens and fungal spores. When air filter systems are either insufficient or have failed, this will allow contamination. If moisture from humidification or condensation combines with organic pollutants it can lead to the growth of microbial activity, representing potential risks to the building's occupants. Our surface and airborne microbial sampling service can identify and benchmark any such contamination.

Other factors, such as stale air, can also have an adverse affect on the building's occupants, causing drowsiness or lethargy. Low humidity can lead to eye, nasal or skin problems, all of which reduce the effectiveness of those working in the building. Our service can include short-term or long-term monitoring to check temperature, relative humidity, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide levels.

Indoor air quality survey report

Our survey report can be tailored to meet any particular indoor air quality need or system hygiene requirement.
A condition survey can include:

• Filtration effectiveness in the AHU

• Surface and airborne microbial sampling

• Long or short term measurements of temperature, relative humidity, CO & CO2

• Airborne particulate, ozone or formaldehyde sampling

Findings are authenticated by UKAS-accredited laboratory analyses or the use of independently calibrated monitoring equipment. This enables the findings to be benchmarked against HSE standards with accompanying recommendations for remedial action. The data within the report will enable building management to meet their duties to provide COSHH and General Risk Assessments as required under Health and Safety legislation.

Our indoor air quality monitoring service can be provided as a stand-alone service or as a precursor to the deep cleaning or remedial works of the ventilation system to eliminate identified hazards.
